Founded
in 1980 by a small group of dedicated volunteers, HospiceCare in The Berkshires
was incorporated as a not-for-profit, Medicare-certified and Massachusetts-licensed
hospice provider in 1991. Services are reimbursed through Medicare, Medicaid,
and private health insurance. HospiceCare services are
offered to everyone, regardless of ability to pay. No one is denied care due to
lack of insurance. The same level of service is offered to all eligible participants,
regardless of their financial status. Mission Statement

For
more than 20 years, HospiceCare in The Berkshires Inc. has provided quality, compassionate
end-of-life-care and bereavement services for Berkshire County residents and their
families.
The mission of HospiceCare is to
provide comprehensive hospice services to patients with terminal illness, and
their families, in collaboration with area providers, vendors, agencies and institutions,
without discrimination on the grounds of race, creed, color, sex, age, national
origin, religious background, physical handicap, or veteran or financial status.
HospiceCare believes that a responsibility exists
to all bereaved individuals suffering the loss of a loved one. Therefore, we offer
formal bereavement services to all members of the community.
Dying
as a Natural Process
 At
HospiceCare, our philosophy recognizes dying as a natural process and as a part
of life's continuum. HospiceCare believes that through appropriate community caring,
patients, and family may attain a degree of mental and spiritual preparation for
death that is satisfactory to them. This philosophy of care is based on the premises
that dying from terminal illness is to be neither hastened nor prolonged artificially
and that bereavement is not an illness to be treated but an experience to be supported.
The quality of life for those
served is as important as the quantity. The outcome goals of services include
self-determined life closure, safe and comfortable dying, and effective grieving. The
HospiceCare philosophy is manifested in the following values, which are promoted
among employees and volunteers in all areas of agency operation:
